The blockbuster Broadway sensation Motown the Musical is running with packed houses at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London's West End since 2016. The real life saga of Motown Records is a jukebox musical featuring 40 hits such as “My Girl”, “Heard it Through the Grapevine” “I Want You Back”, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”. The Motown sound has a major contribution in changing face of the music industry forever. We still feel its huge influence on modern music. The show, Motown the Musical features a book by Berry Gordy Jr. who is also the founder of Motown. The show is adapted from his 1994 autobiography. The story revolves around the foundation of Motown record label by Gordy as well as his life long relationships to stars like Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and The Temptations. The popular London show has an ensemble cast of 40 performers. The story of Motown the Musical commences in 1983 with the 25th anniversary celebration of Motown records where all the stars have gathered. The name Motown Records is made with the combination of the words Motor and Town which is also a nickname for Detroit, the place of the foundation of label. The record label is quite synonymous with a pop infused soul sound. This small record label Motown had attained remarkable as 79 records were in the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100 chart between 1960 and 1969. Charles Randolph-Wright directed the Broadway production and was nominated for four Tony Awards. On April 2013, the award winning show made its debut at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre and closed in January 2015. Before making its debut in London, the show enjoyed successful USA tour. The Shaftesbury Theatre is positioned on the popular Shaftesbury Avenue, which is also one of the busiest roads in the capital. The theatre is located close to some other theatres such as Apollo and Lyric. The venue is the abode of some of the popular affordable restaurants and bars. Leicester Square and Covent Garden is located at a distance of 400m near market or neighbouring shops. Soho and Chinatown are located at a nearby walking distance and you can enjoy wide range of cheap and diverse international cuisine.
